What Temperature Should I Set My Air Conditioner In The Summer?
Choosing where to set the temperature of the air conditioner during the summer months can be a debate. Fortunately, we’ve done the research and have reached a conclusion as to what the best temperature is and we have a few tips to help protect your pocketbook.
Ask any homeowner what temperature you should set your air conditioner in the summer, and they’ll tell you about 72 degrees. While this may seem like a modest number the United States Department of Energy says that this is far too low. They recommend setting it at 78 degrees during the summer months to help offset using too much energy. If you feel this is too hot for you don’t worry! We have a few tips to help you deal with the heat.
Set it higher when you’re not home
The higher the temperature rises outside, the harder your air conditioner has to work to keep your home where you want it. A way to help offset this is by setting your thermostat higher for when you and your family are away from home. This way your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to cool a home with no one inside.
Keep curtains closed
By keeping the curtains closed in your home you’ll be helping your air conditioner out by blocking additional sunlight from heating your home. This will help to keep the heat levels down and keep your family comfortable.
Upgrade your air conditioner
Newer units have all sorts of ways to keep a house cooler without having to constantly run cool air. Many newer units have fans that can operate at different speeds and have 2-stage cooling capabilities. While it may cost you more upfront, the money saved in the long run can vastly outweigh what you originally paid.
While 78 degrees can seem too high at times we believe that with the right HVAC system staying cool is a breeze. If you have any questions about HVAC systems or are looking for a new air conditioning unit give us a call!
