What to Do If the Toilet Overflows

What to Do If the Toilet Overflows

There is nothing worse than a toilet that is about to overflow. Fortunately, knowing what to do can help ease the stress of the situation. Follow these steps to manage toilet overflow problems in the future.

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply – Turn off the water that is running to the toilet. Most toilets have a water valve located behind the toilet bowl. Turn the valve counterclockwise until the water flow to the toilet flow stops.
  2. Remove the Tank Cover – Lift up the float cup or ball so that the water stops running. If the water won’t stop running, find the water supply valve to your entire house and turn off the water. This is usually located in the basement.
  3. Remove the Clog – Use a toilet plunger or toilet auger to remove the toilet clog.
