05 Nov Impact of Hard Water on Plumbing Systems Explained
When people think of hard water — if they even think about it in the first place — they often think of the white calcium deposits that we left on their glassware and the scratchy feeling the water gives their laundry. However, hard water can also have big effects on your plumbing — and none of them are particularly positive.
If you want to keep your plumbing safe, it’s essential to understand how hard water affects your plumbing.
Hard Water’s Effect on Your Plumbing
Clogs
This type of water is chock full of mineral sediments, typically calcium and/or limestone, which is what makes it hard. As those sediments make their way through your plumbing, they can begin to cling to the inside of the pipes. Over time, more and more sediments can latch onto the pipes, eventually forming a nasty clog. If left unchecked, it can eventually create a buildup of pressure and cause the pipe to burst.
Low Water Pressure
The same way hard water sediments that can cling to the inside of pipes can also stick to plumbing fixtures. As the openings of those fixtures because more clogged, your water pressure can lessen, making easily washing your dishes and taking a shower very difficult.
Water Heater Issues
If hard water sediments build up inside your water heater tank, they can corrode the tank itself and cause the unit to break. While you can regularly flush the tank (and should) to remove sediment buildup, as long as you have hard water, the problem will remain.
