Why Hiding Your AC Compressor Is a Bad Idea

If you’re like most homeowners, you take pride in the appearance and functionality of your yard. You’ve spent a great deal of time planning just the right furniture pieces and landscaping details to make it worthy of being in a magazine. When you’ve put all of that work in, you may not be too pleased that a large, silver air conditioning condenser is sitting in the corner, messing up your aesthetic.

If this is the case, you may be tempted to do whatever you can to hide your outdoor compressor — but that’s not always the best idea. Here’s why:

You Can Block Off Airflow

For starters, your unit needs to have proper airflow from the space around it in order to function properly. Without enough airflow, the unit will struggle to function which can lead to poor efficiency, system malfunctions, or a complete breakdown.

Outdoor condenser units should have several feet of space around them on all sides in order to ensure proper airflow. If you place a fence or other hiding method around your condenser, you may end up cutting off its airflow. So while the unit itself may be hidden, you could be doing major harm to it in the process.

You Could Fill It with Debris

Instead of a fence, some homeowners will plant large bushes in front of their condensers to hide them. However, this can lead to branches, twigs, and leaves from the bush becoming lodged in your condenser. If this happens, your unit could be damaged or not function properly.
