That is why the American Lung Association stresses the importance of good indoor air quality. Here are a few ways to improve air quality at home and keep your family healthy.

Improve Indoor Air Quality:

  • Carbon Monoxide –Avoid leaving the car idling in the garage, burning gas indoors, or leaving lawnmowers running in an enclosed space. Fuel-burning releases carbon monoxide that could cause life-threatening problems. Install a carbon monoxide detector to protect your family in the event an appliance malfunctions or is used improperly.
  • Fix Leaks – Leaks in your roof, foundation, basement, or crawlspace can create dampness, mold and mildew indoors. This can be a big problem for indoor air quality. Dampness can put you at a higher risk of wheezing, coughing and asthma symptoms.
  • Clean Your Air Conditioner Keep asthma triggers out of your home by fixing any leaks in your home air conditioner. Standing water can encourage dust mites, mold and mildew to grow. Remember to clean your air conditioner regularly!
  • Control Humidity – Keeping your home ventilated can help make sure that your home is not too humid or too dry. If your home is too humid, install an exhaust fan and fix any leaks. If your home is too dry, consider installing a humidifier.
