Why Is My Second Floor So Hot?

Have you ever avoided going upstairs in your own home because, for some frustrating reason, the second floor seems to be 20 degrees hotter than the first? If so, you’re not alone. Plenty of homeowners struggle with uneven cooling through the different floors of their house. But just because it’s common, it doesn’t mean you have to put up with it.

There are a few reasons why your second floor may be so hot compared to the ground floor.

Your Attic is Poorly Insulated

When the summer sun causes your attic to become swelteringly hot, if it’s not properly insulated, that heat can seep into the second floor of your home. In order to avoid this, it’s essential to have your attic properly insulated so hot air stays there and doesn’t counteract your AC’s efforts.

Your Ductwork is Dirty or Faulty

If the ductwork that brings cold air to the second floor of your home has any damage to it, it causes that part of the house to be hot. That damage could include having leaks or being out of place or even just being dirty.

You Have Hot Roof

If your roof materials absorb heat rather than reflect it, heat can get trapped inside your attic and seep through to the rest of your home. The more heat that spreads to your second floor, the harder your AC will have to work to try and get your home cool.

Your Thermostat Only Controls Your First Floor

Don’t always assume your thermostat controls your AC throughout your entire home. Sometimes, your thermostat is only set up to control certain areas of your home, so all your cooling efforts for your first floor won’t apply to your second.
