Are Your Vents Causing Heat Loss?

When the temperatures outside are in the single digits, and simply stepping outside into the cold air hurts, heat loss is one of the last things you’ll want to deal with. Add on the fact that heat loss contributes to higher energy bills, and heat loss becomes even more problematic.

Sometimes, your air vents and connecting ducts can be the cause behind your home’s heat loss.

Signs Your Vents and Air Ducts are Causing Heat Loss

Your Vents are Covered

In the past, we’ve talked about all the issues that closed vents can cause. But beyond all the more serious problems, at face value, closed or covered vents don’t let heat into a room. If you’re not even aware the vents are closed or covered and aren’t feeling any heat in certain rooms, you’ll likely crank your heat higher — as well as your energy bills in the process.

You Have Uneven Heating

Do you walk from one room to another and notice they feel vastly different in temperature? Unless you have zone heating, this is often a sign of heat loss caused by your air ducts and vents. If your ducts have cracks or are damaged, air leaks can allow warm air to escape rather than be pushed to rooms in your home.

You Have a Lot of Dust in Your Home

While, yes, dust can come from a number of different areas, if you’re pretty on top of cleaning up but still have a dusty home, you may have cracks or leaks in your ductwork. This pulls in air, dust and other particles outside and pushes them through your home.

Your Energy Bills Skyrocket

If damaged ducts allow for heat loss, your HVAC system could run for longer and cause a spike in your energy bills. If your HVAC system is well-maintained and your energy habits haven’t changed too much, you should probably have your ducts inspected.
