Should I Keep My Doors Closed When the AC is Running?

If you're like most people, when you have the AC running in your bedroom or living room, you want to keep that cold air present as long as possible. Especially in houses with multiple inhabitants, this can lead to your closing the interior doors of your home to keep cold air in certain rooms.

However, it's not always wise to keep your doors closed as your AC is running. Here's why:

Air Cannot Spread to Other Rooms

While this is typically the effect that many homeowners are trying to achieve, it's not good to keep air in one room. This is because, if air is unable to spread to other rooms of your home, your air conditioner will have to run for longer periods of time in order to create a cohesive, even temperature throughout the rest of your home.

By keeping your interior doors open, you're allowing the cool air to spread more quickly and give your air conditioner a break.

Pressure Build-Ups Can Occur

The more air that is kept inside of a room when doors are closed, the more pressure builds inside that room. As your AC pumps more and more air into a closed room, eventually it will be forced out of any small opening in that room, such as a window crack or ceiling vent. Once that happens, your AC will be wasting energy continuously pumping air into that room only for it to escape.

The best way to achieve an even, cool temperature throughout your entire home is to keep your interior doors open and allow air to flow freely. For more tips and help keeping your cooling system running in tip-top shape, contact the experts at Wahl Family Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing.
