Tackle Allergy Season Effectively with Your HVAC System
While we gladly welcome warmer spring weather back to Pittsburgh, we don’t really welcome the allergies that come along with it. Between higher pollen counts, dust mites, and the dander that comes from our furry friends shedding their winter coats, the new spring weather can have you sneezing up a storm. But there are ways you can tackle allergy season the right way by employing the help of your HVAC system.
Choose the Right Filters
Every HVAC system involves filters that help remove particles from the air that it circulates through your home. In order to tackle allergy season in the best way possible, you should know what filters will work best for your home.
Flat Panel Filters
These have the lowest MERV rating and work fine for protecting your furnace, but don’t do much to improve your indoor air quality and remove allergens from the air.
Medium Efficiency Filters
These have a MERV rating of about five to 13 and do a better job of filtering out dust, mold, and other allergy-inducing particles from the air.
High-Efficiency Filters
These have higher MERV ratings of 14 to 16 and can remove very small particles from your air.
HEPA Filters
These have the highest MERV rating of 17 to 20 and filter out the smallest allergy-inducing particles from your air. However, it’s important to make sure your HVAC can handle their high-efficiency filtering since sometimes they can sometimes put stress on your system because of how efficient they can be.
Clean Your HVAC System Regularly
Besides changing your air filters every one to two months, it’s important to keep the other components of your HVAC system clean. Have the ducts in your central HVAC system cleaned at the start of allergy season and have your unit inspected if you think it smells of mold or mildew.
Install an Air Purifier
While your filters can help keep particles out of the air that goes through your HVAC system, it can’t completely remove allergens from the air in your home. Adding an air purification or air filtration system can help remove more harmful or allergy-inducing particles from your home and help you breathe easier.
