Understanding AC Smell: Common Causes and Solutions

Has your air conditioner ever kicked in and you’ve noticed that it’s blowing some pretty gross-smelling air? It’s bad enough that your home is being circulated with bad smells, but it’s even worse when you think of the bacteria that could be in that air itself. There are a few problems that could make your AC smell bad.

Mold or Mildew on the Evaporator Coils

As condensation builds up on your evaporator coils, it mixes with any dust or dirt there and allows mold, mildew, and other bacteria to grow. This may happen to your unit if:

  • You can physically see mold or mildew on the coils.
  • There is ice forming on the coils.
  • Your AC’s air flow is not as strong as it usually is.

Clogged Condensate Drain Line

If your condensate drain line becomes clogged, the standing water that collects there provides mold, mildew, and bacteria with a breeding ground. This may occur in your unit if:

  • You notice water leaking from your indoor unit.
  • Your AC suddenly turns off.

Mold in Your Ductwork

High humidity levels and leaks in your air ducts can cause mold to grow inside your duct system. The only way you’ll be able to know, for certain, that this is making your AC smell bad is by getting an inside look at your ducts. You should get an AC repair technician to do this as they can get farther into your ductwork using special cameras.
