Founder, President, Sales Manager
John first got interested in the industry as a teenager working with his uncles who were in the HVAC business. He was already mechanically inclined and enjoyed working with his hands to make things work. He decided to attend a HVAC technical school at night while he was still in high school and continued to work with his uncles on the weekends. He learned how to design, fabricate, and install custom duct work in a way that would allow the equipment to breathe and operate properly while maximizing the comfort of people’s homes.
At the age of 19, he started Wahl Heating & Cooling out of his parent’s garage in Beechview, PA. John did all of the sales, installs, and service work himself. His mother, Lorraine ran the office for him while his father Bill “the Barber” spread the word of this budding new business. For the first 5-years John didn’t advertise but instead relied completely on referrals and his reputation for being an honest, fair, qualified contractor. He knew that if he provided quality products at a fair price that people would not only choose to have their equipment installed by him but that they would also come back year after year for repairs and service.
As the business grew, John eventually had to hire and train employees to help him keep up with the growing demand. He hired and trained Installers, Service Technicians, and Comfort Consultants on the Wahl Way – quality work that is warrantied and up front pricing.
John’s specialty is solving customer’s comfort issues. He likes to help people see that they can be more comfortable in their homes, breathing cleaner, healthier air, and spending less money on their utilities by making changes that no one had thought to consider before. Whether it’s through his advanced masterful duct (or hydronic pipe/pump design), or by utilizing the newest equipment in the industry that just changed what we’re capable of, John’s confident that he and his team can provide a solution that will help his customers enjoy their indoor spaces.
Almost 40 years later John is actively involved in the training and coaching of Wahl’s Sales Department and in the design and planning of the installations. For the more challenging jobs he still provides in-home consultations and works with his team to ensure that the company’s original ideals continue to be met.
Manager, Corporate Officer
Sharon graduated from Bradford Business School in June of 1985. She joined the family business as a Customer Service Representative just two weeks after marrying John Wahl in October of 1986. She helped create brand recognition and assisted people in learning how to pronounce Wahl (sounds like Wall) by establishing the company’s first logo. Enlisting her father’s artistic skills she had him draw a brick wall behind the name and a logo was born.
Over the years, Sharon has been instrumental in establishing many of the successful procedures and processes that Wahl still uses today. She set up Wahl’s Preferred Customer Maintenance Agreement program which allows customers to receive discounts on cleanings, repairs, service, and tune-up costs by committing to annual maintenance.
As the company has grown, Sharon has used her skills and adaptability to perform any of the tasks that needed to be done holding every position in the office, sometimes simultaneously, from Customer Service Representative to Dispatcher, Call Center Manager, Accounting Manager, Office Manager, and General Manager.
Most recently Sharon is the Accounts Manager and she assists with marketing, HR, business planning, and customer relations.
General Manager, Service Manager, Corporate Officer
Jennifer graduated from Edinboro University with her B.A. in Communications and then from Point Park with a degree in Secondary English education. She taught high school English in Maryland before moving back to Pittsburgh to work with at-risk teens, and then as therapeutic support staff with families that have children on the autism spectrum or with special needs.
In 2007, she agreed to temporarily fill in as a Customer Service Representative at Wahl until a replacement could be hired. Instead, she saw ways to help protect and improve what her family had built and found that she had passion and talent for it. Jennifer educated herself on HVAC equipment, installations, and service. She quickly updated the technology the company uses, hired and trained many new staff members, and implemented best practices for customer service and satisfaction.
Today as our General Manager and Service Manager Jennifer uses her teaching and communications background to train new employees and provide coaching and continued education for our Service Technicians and Customer Service Representatives. She subscribes to the premise of the triple win, taking care of our employees so that they will provide excellent service which will in turn allow the company to thrive.
Installation, Plumbing & Fleet Manager
David started attending AMPAC in 2005 (Associated Master Plumbers of Allegheny County) at night while in his Sophomore year of High School. During the summers, he worked at Wahl Heating & Cooling helping with the installs. After graduating from High School, David worked as an Apprentice and Journeyman under several Master Plumbers to satisfy the requirements of his Master Plumber’s license which he earned in 2017.
David started to work at Wahl full time in 2008 working his way up from helper to installer, to Lead Installer, and then to Service Technician. As a Service Technician he worked to improve diagnostic and testing methods and helped to add best practices to ensure customer satisfaction. He also assisted with hiring and training new employees.
In 2012, David moved into the office to help expand Wahl’s list of services to include Plumbing. He currently manages the Plumbing and Installation departments with a focus on quality workmanship, design accuracy, customer service, and the continued training and education of himself and the employees on the latest technological advancements in the industry.
Installation Coordination, Dispatcher, Warehouse Manager
Maggie joined the team in 2007 as a Customer Service Representative and married into the family officially in 2013. From the beginning, she picked up the industry quickly providing an empathetic friendly voice for Wahl’s customers. In 2008, she moved from CSR to Dispatcher where she ensures that the right technician is sent to the right job based on customer need and technician skill set. She was an instrumental part of the team that made it possible for Wahl to more than double the size of the Service Department.
Maggie’s role with the company continued to expand as Wahl grew, and she continued to dispatch but also took over the role of warehouse manager. She organizes and restocks parts, supplies, and materials for the trucks, shop, and installations. She works closely with the Install and Sales Managers to stage installs, coordinate trips for the parts runners, and to restock the service trucks.
When she’s not helping customers or technicians on the phone, she is managing the maintenance and organization of the building and the lot.
