Alternatives To Chemical Drain Cleaners

Drain Cleaning Solutions That Don’t Contain Harsh Chemicals

Was there ever a time you were happy to have a clogged drain? We’re thinking the answer is no, right? Well, unfortunately, it’s an inevitable part of living in a home or apartment and trust us when we tell you it’s best to stay away from commercial drain cleaning solutions. Not only are they full of harsh chemicals that can be detrimental to your health, they can wreak havoc on your plumbing system, too. See below for a list of natural drain cleaning solutions that are much safer alternatives to the ones you typically see in the store:

Cream of Tartar

When hair and soap scum can be to blame for a clog, this recipe usually does the trick. Mix two cups of baking soda with ⅛ cup of cream of tatar and ½ cup of salt. Pour at least two cups of hot water down the train and then add your homemade mixture. Let it sit for about an hour and then wash it all down with two more cups of hot water.

Baking Soda & Lemon Juice

You may have heard that baking soda and vinegar is commonly used to unclog a drain and while it does prove to be an effective mixture, some people can’t bear the smell of the vinegar. Baking soda and lemon juice will work in a similar way, while leaving the area with a more pleasant scent.

Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup of lemon juice. Let it sit for an hour and then wash it down with a pot of hot water.

Salt, Borax & Vinegar

Start by pouring ¼ cup of salt down the drain, followed by ¼ cup borax. Next, add ½ cup vinegar and 2 cups of hot water. Let the mixture sit for an hour and then wash it down with a pot of hot water.
