Common Causes of Clogged Drains Explained

A clogged drain and can lead to even bigger complications if left untreated. If you notice your drains are clogging more frequently, these common reasons could be to blame:

Hair: Hair is public enemy #1 when it comes to clogged drains. Drains in your tub and shower collect loose hair strands that fall out, eventually making their way to your pipes. When enough hair clumps up, it makes it hard for water to pass through, causing the water to back up into your tub. Make sure to catch loose hairs and clean your drain before this becomes a bigger issue.

Grease: Grease is one of the most common culprits of clogged drains, yet it’s very easy to prevent. While pouring grease down the kitchen sink seems like a good way to clean up, fatty substances washed down the sinks will actually stick to the inside of the pipes, causing a road block for water. Instead, scrape the fatty grease in your garbage before you rinse your dishes.

Everyday Hygiene Products: Products that are involved in your daily routine can cause some serious damage to your pipes. These include, cotton swabs, feminine products, dental floss and wipes! You may not think that something as small as dental floss can do damage–but think again. While many of these items are marketed as “flushable,” trust us when we say, do not toss these in your toilet! To avoid coming home to a swimming pool in your bathroom, always be sure to throw these in your trash and leave the flushing to toilet paper only.
