Ductless v. Central Heat

Ductless v. Central Heat

Let’s be honest: very few homeowners are concerned with how the inner-workings of their heating system functions. That being said, very many homeowners get concerned when something goes wrong and they’re left with a freezing home. If that “something wrong” happens to require a replacement, you should know the difference between ductless v. central heating systems.

Central Heating:
Unless you’re an HVAC technician, a furnace can seem like some big, complicated object that just hangs out in your home. In reality, a furnace functions pretty simply. Cold air gets sucked in, warmed by a heat exchanger, and pumped out through your air ducts to the vents. Waste is pushed out the chimney and return ducts bring cold air to the furnace to be heated. As simple as the process is, there are some disadvantages to having a forced-air system like this. Faulty air ducts can lead to wasted energy and heat escaping outdoors, while furnace filters can get clogged if not properly maintained.

Ductless Heating:
Ductless heating is relatively new to North America, but it’s already proving to be a serious competitor against central heating. Unlike central heating, which delivers heat to your entire home, ductless systems deliver heat to zones of your home. This is a major perk of ductless heating since it allows you to customize the temperature in each room on individual interfaces called “heads.” Each interface is connected to a main unit outside your home that lets you really feel the difference. Additionally, ductless heating systems are easier to install and are much more efficient than baseboard heaters.
