How to Keep Your Garage Cool

How to Keep Your Garage Cool

For all the handymen and women out there, a garage is a place to house all your tools, work on projects, and simply escape for a little “me time.” However, as summer weather continues to roll in, your garage can turn into a sweltering space that you can barely breathe in.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to keep your garage cool and comfortable all summer long.

Allow for Natural Ventilation

If your garage has windows, crack a few of them while you’re in your garage — and even when you’re not in there if you feel safe doing so. You can also open the garage door a few inches to allow for some natural airflow.

Install a Fan

The next step you can take to improve the airflow in your garage is installing a ceiling fan. Notice we said “improve the airflow,” not cool the room down. Ceiling fans move air around so they make a room feel less stuffy, but they don’t actually cool air. Even so, ceiling fans can help make your garage feel a bit more bearable.

Update Your Insulation

Good insulation can help keep cold air in and hot air out of your garage. The worse condition your current insulation is in, the more air (hot and cold) can pass between the walls of your garage, making for an uncomfortable space.

Add an AC

If your garage continues to be swelteringly hot, it may be a good idea to add an air conditioner unit to the space. Ductless AC units are a great option for cooling your garage since they can be easily installed and require only a small hole in your wall to run a refrigerant line.
