Did you know that there are around 3,200 gas-related fires each year in the United States? And according to the National Fire Protection Agency, around 2,000 of them are related to natural gas. Sometimes, whether it be due to accidentally turning on a gas appliance or a crack in a supply line, you can suffer a gas leak in your home.
But since gas is not visible, you have to be aware of the scary signs of a gas leak.
Hissing Sound
If you’re quickly moving around your kitchen or your kids come running through in a hurry, one of you could easily knock into one of the knobs on your stove and allow for gas to leak into your home. If that happens, you’ll probably hear a slight hissing sound.
A hissing sounds could also be coming from a gas line, but those can be a bit harder to hear. While you can simply turn off the appliance, if the issue is with your gas line, you’ll need to exit your home right away and have that professionally repaired.
Sulfur Smell
Even though the gas used in your home is naturally odorless, utility companies will add scent agents to the gas to make it more detectable in case of a leak. If you’re walking around your home, especially near your heating system and you smell something that resembles rotten eggs, you probably have a gas leak.
The reason we say this is common near your heating system is that natural gas can leak through a broken heat exchanger. If you think that may be the cause behind that rotten egg smell, you should call your trust HVAC company to take a look at your unit.
