Tips to Prevent Holiday Plumbing Problems

Many people spend more time in the kitchen during the holidays cooking for visiting friends and families. Unfortunately, this can also put extra strain on your plumbing system. Here are a few tips to help you prevent plumbing problems through the holidays.

Tips to Prevent Holiday Plumbing Problems:

  • Dispose of Cooking Oil – While cooking oil looks like a liquid, it actually hardens in your plumbing pipes. This can cause your sinks to drain slowly and even cause complete blockages. Make sure you throw oil away, rather than dumping it down the sink.
  • Keep an Eye on Faucets – Although you may not be spending as much time outside, keep an eye on any outdoor faucets. Once the weather starts to freeze, any outdoor hoses can burst if they aren’t disconnected.
  • Check Your Water Heater – How old is your water heater? Most water heaters last about 15 to 20 years. Check your water heater regularly for signs of rusting or leakage.
  • Watch What You Flush – If you are having guests over for the holidays, remind them that they should throw away paper towels, baby wipes and other paper products. These items can block your drain if they are flushed!
