Why Does My Filter Get So Dirty So Quickly?

Why Does My Filter Get So Dirty So Quickly?

One of the most important things to do when it comes to caring for your HVAC system is to change your filter. Normally, your filter should last you between 30 and 45 days, depending on its quality.

But what happens when you find your filter needing to be replaced sooner than that time span? Well, there are a few reasons you may need to replace your filter frequently, such as:

You Have Pets

Especially if your pet has longer fur, they will shed more and leave more dander around your home. All of that ends up being pushed through your HVAC system and caught by your air filter. Since the filter is catching more material, it will have to be replaced or cleaned more often.

You Leave Your Fan On

Your thermostat will typically have two settings for your fan: auto and on. If you leave your fan on, your HVAC unit will continuously cycle and pull in dust, pollen, and other particles that will eventually clog up your filter. To remedy this, make sure your thermostat is set to auto — which helps save you energy as well!

Your Filter Has a High Merv Rating

The higher quality your filter is (i.e. the higher Merv rating it has), the more particles it is able to grab from your home’s air. Because it is catching more, the filter can also become filled or dirty more quickly.
