When Should an AC System be Replaced?

We base our recommendation to replace on a few key factors:

  1. The age of the unit – Older units are less energy efficient than the newer models. As environmental regulations change equipment manufacturers continue to make units that are more efficient and more environmentally friendly than their predecessors. Updating to a newer more efficient system can save home owner’s 20% or more on utility bills depending on the efficiency of the existing unit. When the efficiency savings surpasses the cost of the average monthly payment on a new unit, replacement may be a better option.
  2. Refrigerant type – The refrigerant used in residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems has changed over the last 10 years. As of 2010 manufacturers were no longer allowed to make units that utilized R22 refrigerant. Legislation called for a reduction of the manufacturing of the refrigerant itself with a 65% reduction in 2015 and the complete phasing out of the refrigerant by 2020. As a result, the price of R22 has skyrocketed since 2015 causing astronomical fees for any repairs requiring the use of that refrigerant. Any existing system that still uses R22 refrigerant should be changed out.
  3. Repair costs – As a rule, we begin to recommend replacement once repair costs exceed $1,000 as that can be close to 1/4 the cost of a new system. When homeowners are able to take advantage of manufacturer limited warranties or extended labor warranties the cost of repairs can often be kept to a minimum for the first 10 years. If a major component fails outside of the warranty terms the cost of those repairs can easily become a deciding factor in whether or not to repair or replace the unit. When faced with costly repairs most people’s biggest concern is whether or not they’ll spend the money and get by a few more years repair free or if they’ll have to turn around and spend even more money on new repairs within the next few years or even in the next few months. At Wahl our technicians provide a thorough evaluation of the complete system with the goal of letting our customers know what is failing now and what might become an issue in the near future so that they can make an informed decision that works or their budget.
  4. Comfort/function – Age and repair status aside, how comfortable you currently are or are not with the existing unit makes a difference in how soon a system should be replaced. If the unit was undersized and incorrectly installed from the start it might the unit may be a lot less efficient than meets the eye. Aside from getting annual tune-ups to ensure that the system is safe and function properly, a quick comfort check may help you decide whether or not you should schedule a system evaluation or tune-up with one of our Consultants or Service Technicians.

Comfort Analysis:

1. Are there any hot/cold spots in the home?

Uneven temperatures in your home can be an indication of improperly sized equipment and/or an issue with the duct work.

2. Are you using any supplementary cooling units such as fans or portable air conditioners to stay cool during the hottest temperatures?

Window units are typically very inefficient and can be a huge energy waster. If you have whole house air conditioning but have to supplement with window units and/or fans to stay cool you likely have an issue with the equipment sizing and/or with the duct work.

3. Using a portable humidistat, what’s the humidity level in your home during the summer months?

If you are reading more than 35% to 45% humidity your air conditioner may be improperly sized.

4. How often does my air conditioner run in the summer?

A unit that is continuously running is unable to satisfy the thermostat. That could mean that the equipment is sized incorrectly but it could also mean that the unit needs to be cleaned and/or repaired.

5. How much does an air conditioner installation cost?

The cost to install a new air conditioner varies widely depending on the specific considerations in every application. Our prices are competitive and will also be provided using up-front, flat rate pricing so that there are never any costly surprises.

Air Conditioner Sizing and System Design

Air conditioners and heat pumps work as part of a system to remove the humidity from your home to create the desired indoor comfort. Units that are too large or too small will waste electricity without ever allowing the homeowner to reach their desired level of comfort. The expertly trained Consultants and Service Technicians at Wahl will custom design your air conditioning system to be the right size for your home to ensure that you achieve maximum energy efficiency and comfort.

Air conditioners are part of a closed refrigeration system that connects to an indoor coil through wiring and copper refrigeration tubing and works in conjunction with the blower of the indoor unit and the ductwork. During the system design and installation process, it is crucial that all of the pieces of the system are matched to work properly with one another. If any of the pieces are the wrong size the system won’t function properly or efficiently. During our design process, our Consultants and Technicians complete a thorough evaluation that includes inspecting each component to ensure a proper match.

To avoid air conditioner breakdowns and to extend the lifespan of your equipment proper airflow is crucial. There are many factors to consider for airflow including duct sizing, outdoor unit placement, as well as the position and size of the coil in relation to the indoor blower.

The Most Important Day of Your New Air Conditioner’s Life is the Day of the Installation

When air conditioners are installed there are steps that need to be taken in order to ensure the proper operation of the system. One such step is connecting the copper lines, or line-set, from the indoor evaporator coil to the outdoor condenser through a process called brazing. If this step is done properly moisture and other contaminants are removed from the system. If the process is done improperly, additional moisture and contaminants end up inside of the system causing acid buildup that eats away at the compressor windings, reversing valves, and other internal components causing breakdowns, costly repairs, and shortening the life-span of the equipment. During the installation process, our installers prevent contaminants from getting into the system by running dry nitrogen through the refrigeration lines while brazing. Dry nitrogen acts as a sponge for moisture and displaces oxygen in the lines during brazing to prevent copper/black oxide forming inside the lines. This process is fundamental for a proper HVAC installation; however, many companies skip this vital step.
