09 Nov How to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter
Winter is right around the corner– and with temperatures dropping, you will really rely on your heating system to keep you warm during the winter chill. Make sure your furnace is ready to take on the cold, with these preparation tips:
Change your filter– This is the simplest way to keep your HVAC system working properly. Not only will routine furnace filter changes help keep you warmer, but they will keep energy costs down as well.
Oil your furnace blower– The furnace blower motor plays an important role in how your heating system functions. Oiling it once a year will help things run smoothly and should prevent it from making any unusual noises when started.
Inspect your chimney– Check your chimney for any obstructions like birds nest or debris, that could have formed over the summer. Be sure there is no significant soot buildup, which can be a fire hazard. If you haven’t had your chimney inspected in a while, call your professionals to clean the ducts.
Make sure your thermostat is working properly-If your thermostat is not working correctly, it could affect the efficiency of your heating system. Be sure to switch your thermostat from cooling to heating and check to make sure that it starts up as soon as you turn it on.
Uncover your vents– Double check that no furniture, curtains or other objects are blocking your heating vents. Not only will heat not be able to escape, but you could risk causing a fire hazard if your furnace overheats.
