How to Use a Plunger

Try as you might, sometimes, you can’t avoid clogs in your toilet. So when you find yourself stuck with one, you may be surprised to find you don’t know how to really use a plunger. Not to worry — Wahl is here to help!

How to Use a Plunger

Check the Water Level

There needs to be a certain amount of water in the bowl in order for your plunger to work correctly. Make sure there is enough water to cover the rim of the plunger.

Pull Out the Flange

You should be using a toilet plunger as opposed to a sink plunger because it has a smaller flange to fit inside the hole in your toilet. Put the flange into the hole at an angle so as much water fits into the cup as possible.

Completely Seal Cup Over the Hole

To achieve a good amount of suction, make sure the flange seal completely covers the hole in your toilet. If it doesn’t, air can escape and the plunger work as well.

Do the Right Motion

To begin removing the clogged, make a push and pull movement with the plunger five to six times, making sure you never break the seal and allow air in. If it doesn’t feel as though you’re building pressure under the plunger, move the plunger around and try again.

Check the Tank

After you’ve “plunged” a few times, remove the lid from the toilet tank and find the rubber flap. (This is going to act as your emergency stop if the toilet ends up still being clogged.)

Flush the Toilet

This is the moment of truth. If it flushes normally, mission accomplished — the clog is gone. If the clog is still there, and you’re worried the toilet may overflow, put that flap down in the tank to stop the water flow. You’re going to have to grab the plunger again and go back to work.
