13 Aug How Well Can You Identify Plumbing Myths?
How much do you think you know about your home plumbing? There are a lot of common misconceptions! Here are a few of the most common home plumbing myths.
Myth: Loud banging noises mean that your water heater is going to blow up.
Many homeowners are afraid when they hear loud banging noises coming from their water heater. However, this noise is actually just caused by sediment that has collected in your tank. These loose minerals prevent the heat from rising properly and it’s the expansion of the resulting air bubbles that cause the popping sound that you hear. While your tank will not explode, sediment does make your water heater less efficient. We recommend draining your water heater to remove sediment and replacing it if it is older than 15 years old.
Myth: Leaky faucets aren’t a major plumbing problem.
Even a small faucet leak can have an impact on your water bill. According to the EPA, household leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide! Not only is this a conservation and money problem, but it also puts extra wear and tear on your plumbing. It can wear out your faucet or stain the basin of your sink.
Myth: Ice cubes will sharpen your garbage disposal blades.
While ice cubes won’t sharpen your garbage disposal blades, they are a good way to clean them! If you notice your sink is starting to smell, drop a few ice cubes down your garbage disposal to help clear away any food that became stuck.
