Why Are My Pipes So Noisy?
Broken Valve or Faucet
If you turn on your faucet and hear a “klunk” followed by restricted water flow, you may have something trapped behind the opening. This prevents the water from flowing and can cause the pipes to make noise as a result of the pressure.
Steam Heating
It is important to keep the water level in a steam boiler at the correct level. Too much water added to a steam boiler can flood the pipes and cause a banging noise.
Forced Hot Water Heating
Forced hot water pipes are normally filled with water. However, sometimes air can get in and cause a lot of gurgling and banging.
Loose Pipes
Pipes that dangle from ceilings or walls can cause banging. As water flows through them, the rapid movement can cause them to shake and bang. Well-supported pipes with insulating clips or hangers are much quieter.
Higher Water Pressure
Normal home water pressure is usually in the 40- to 70- psi range. When the water pressure is higher, the pipes can become noisy. Reducing water pressure will help control and minimize pipe banging noises.
