29 May Why Is My AC Always Running?
When the summer weather makes you feel hot and sticky, we’re sure you don’t have a problem with your AC running to keep you cool — but it shouldn’t be running 24/7. A constantly running unit usually signifies a problem, either due to lack of maintenance or faulty installation. If you notice your AC is always running, these may be some of the reasons why.
Why Is My AC Always Running?
Improper Size
When you first have a cooling system installed, it’s important to make sure the system is the right size for your home’s needs. If the unit is too small, it will have to work overtime to keep your entire home cool.
Not only will this cause your utility bills to rise, but since your system is working so much harder, it will experience more wear-and-tear and potentially break down sooner.
Dirty Air Filters
We advise time and time again that you need to clean or replace your air filters every month. If the filters are dirty, it restricts the air flow in the system and doesn’t allow the unit to work properly, so it will constantly be running to try to create enough cool air.
Air Leaks
Imagine you tried blowing up a balloon that had tiny holes in it. Since air would be able to escape from it, you’d constantly keep blowing into the balloon to try to fill it. Your AC works the same way when there are air leaks in your ductwork or around your windows or doors.
You can usually fix this by having leaks in and around your ductwork sealed and by better insulating your home.
The Unit is Too Old
The older your AC unit gets, the harder it has to work to do the same job. Most central air systems only last about 15 to 20 years, so if your unit is older than that, it may constantly run to keep your home cool instead of being able to cycle on and off.
Besides it constantly running, there are a few other signs that you should replace your AC.
Lack of Maintenance
Your AC system is a working machine that needs regular maintenance several times a year. If you don’t have that maintenance done, your unit could develop a number of problems that prevent it from working efficiently and cause it to run all the time.
